Italian women to participate in a protest against Silvio Berlusconi

Almaty. February 3. Kazakhstan Today - Italian women plan to participate in a protest against Silvio Berlusconing intending to throw pairs of knickers at his mansion in protest at his attitude towards women and his involvement in an alleged prostitution ring, the agency reports.

A series of demonstrations are due to be held this month, including the one on Sunday in which a group of women plan to hurl pairs of knickers over the fence of his mansion outside Milan as a protest against his apparent obsession with scantily-clad showgirls, The Telegraph reported.

Thousands of women will also participate in the online campaign started by La Repubblica newspaper.

"I''m a woman and I say ''enough''," the Telegraph quoted many of the women as writing, while others submitted their photographs inscribed with messages condemning "men who buy and sell women''s bodies."

And a civil society group, Liberty and Justice claims to have collected 100,000 signatures demanding that Mr Berlusconi resign immediately.

"In no other democratic country would a prime minister, faced with such serious legal accusations, remain in office longer than a few hours," the group said in a statement.

Hundreds of women have sent messages and their photographs to an online campaign, organised by the centre-Left La Repubblica newspaper, against the 74-year-old leader's penchant for surrounding himself with nubile models and starlets.

A protest will also be held in Florence on Saturday, with the slogan "Italy is not a brothel".

A protest in Milan on Feb 13 will coincide with demonstrations by Mr Berlusconi's supporters against what they see as a biased judiciary bent on destroying the prime minister.

The most damaging charges against Mr Berlusconi are that he paid for sex with an under age prostitute and later put pressure on police in Milan to have her released from custody over an allegation of theft.

Prosecutors in Milan, who are in charge of the investigation, are expected to request by Friday that he be sent to trial.

On Thursday the lower house of parliament will vote on whether to authorise a search of the Milan offices used by Mr Berlusconi's accountant.
