Minister of Information and Communications Dauren Abayev said that he was surprised by the rush caused by the closure of 88 foreign TV channels within Kazakhstan.
When we declared the closure of 88 TV channels, the emphasis was placed on another thing. I was honestly surprised that the emphasis was replaced. We placed an emphasis that representation offices of 215 foreign channels were opened. Kazakhstan has not seen such a figure over 25 years of independence. Now, we have brought all foreign channels into the legal fold. That is, all foreign TV channels have their own representation offices in Kazakhstan where they work," said the head of the Ministry on the sidelines of the Government of Kazakhstan.
As Abayev told, if a foreign channel is broadcast within Kazakhstan, it should have its own representation office in Kazakhstan.
The closure of these TV channels does not mean that they will not work in Kazakhstan in the future. It only means that if they intend to open their representation offices, they should fulfill all procedures set by the legislation of Kazakhstan, and they can return to Kazakhstan. (..) How it worked in the past? Earlier, the majority of representation offices were in other states, and we had difficulties to work with them. And now, I am honestly surprised by the fact that everyone emphasized the closure of the channels, instead of placing an emphasis on that fact that representation offices were finally opened by the TV channels," said the Minister.
