The government of Kazakhstan does not meet its engagements to OSCE on liberalization of mass media legislation.

Astana. February 26. Kazakhstan Today - The government of Kazakhstan does not meet its engagements to OSCE on liberalization of mass media legislation. The chairman of the union of journalists of Kazakhstan Seytkazy Matayev said during the round table - Mass Media Legislation of Kazakhstan - Realities and Prospects with participation of OSCE representatives, the agency reports.

As it was informed earlier, in January, 2008, the government made negative conclusion on the bill On Mass Media, prepared by nongovernmental organizations in Kazakhstan, having explained that acceptance of the new law will entail unreasonable increase in financial expenses from the republican budget.

In the opinion of the chairman of the union of journalists, the government does not meet its engagements to OSCE on liberalization of mass media legislation. "The practice of the last three years has shown that the introduced amendments have not improved the situation of the Kazakhstan press," he emphasized.

The Minister of Culture and Information of Kazakhstan Yermuhamet Yertysbayev considers accusations of the journalistic community unreasonable.
