Kazakhstan ready to introduce biometric passports - Ministry of Justice

Almaty. July 17. Kazakhstan Today - Kazakhstan is ready to introduce biometric passports. The chairman of Committee of Registration Service and Legal Assistance of the Ministry of Justice of Kazakhstan, Samat Abish, informed today at the press conference, the agency reports.

"The first original samples of the Kazakhstan electronic biometric passports have successfully passed approbation, which confirms that our passports are ready to be used and are 100 % conformed to all international norms, requirements and characteristics. Approbation was made on the specialized reading equipment and the software used on boundary check points of the international airport Changi of Singapore.

Issuing of new passports will begin in the beginning of November of 2008. Preliminary cost of new passports will reach nearly 5 thousand KZT. "After mass issue of these passports Kazakhstan citizens will be able to more comfortably and in the shortest terms pass passport control in the countries where use of electronic biometric passports is compulsory," the chairman of Committee of Registration Service and Legal Assistance said.

According to Director of the Republican State Enterprise Banknote Factory of the National Bank of Kazakhstan, Zhomart Kazhmuratov, Banknote Factory has participated in the process of development of electronic passport from the first days of the beginning of realization of this project. Development of design and issue of the sample of the new electronic passport are carried out by experts of the factory.
