Kazakhstan to institute ID passports for snow leopard

This will be made using camera traps.
ID passports with names will be instituted for snow leopard inhabiting the territory of Kazakhstan, Yerzhan Yerkinbayev, an adviser to the director of the Almaty Zoo, has shared on his Instagram.

The former director of the Almaty Zoo has shared that a camera trap will make it possible to trace each snow leopard and institute ID passports.

We have a goal of not only constructing a rehabilitation center for the injured leopards removed from poachers, a nursery to breed them for the further release into the wild, but also honing the methods for recording and preserving the snow leopard. I am getting familiarized with the device called a camera trap, owing which we can trace and name each snow leopard. This camera trap has a SIM card to send images to the office in no time," writes Yerzhan Yerkinbayev.

According to him, over hundreds of snow leopard inhibit Kazakhstan, but the number of camera traps is 15 in the region.

We’ll do our best to come up with the method and purchase the necessary equipment to improve the methods for recording and preserving the snow leopard by the summer with the Institute of Zoology and the National Park [Ile-Alatau National Park – the editor’s remark]. The programme will be funded by the Foundation established by Nurali Aliyev," according to the author.
