Almaty. August 6. Kazakhstan Today - Many countries of the world including Ukraine and Russia have not succeeded in struggle against HIV. The United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, said at XVII International AIDS Conference opened on August 3 in Mexico City, the agency reports referring to the UN News Center.

Ban Ki Moon has called the international community to strengthen common efforts on pandemic spread prevention. "Majority of countries of the world are still far from achievement of the goal defined two years ago at the UN General Assembly - by 2010 to reach universal access to services on HIV prevention, treatment, care and support," the UN secretary General stated.

The United UN Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) published 2008 Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic. "Death rate due to HIV has reduced over recent years. Number of new HIV infections has decreased by about 3 million in 2001 up to 2.7 million in 2007. Last year number of HIV-positive pregnant women who received anti-retro-viral medicine has increased from 14 % up to 33 %. Number of new HIV-infections among children over the same period has decreased from 410 thousand up to 370 thousand.

However, number of new HIV infected continues to grow in such countries as Vietnam, Indonesia, Kenya, China, Mozambique, Papua New Guinea, the Russian Federation and Ukraine.

The UN Secretary General is concerned that these states will face difficulties in achievement of one of the objectives of Millennium Development - to stop and turn back process of AIDS spread by 2015.

He has urged world leaders and representatives of the private sector to allocate more resources for support of HIV-infected people that will help them to receive necessary treatment and will prolong their lives. In this connection, Ban Ki Moon welcomed the recent decision of the USA to allocate within the nearest five years $48 billion on struggle against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in the world. He also highly estimated adherence of G-8 to efforts of maintenance of universal access to preventive measures for HIV infection.
