Almaty. July 21. Kazakhstan Today - According to the joint report of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) more than 2.5 billion people on the planet live in bad sanitary conditions and 1.2 billion - in full insanitary conditions, the agency reports referring to the UN News Center.

According to the research, there is a progress in solution of the problem of access to potable water. As of today, 87 % of the world population has access to portable water. According to the experts' forecasts, by 2015 this figure will increase up to 90 %.

Number of people living in full insanitary conditions has reduced from 24 % in 2006 up to 18 % in 2008. The majority of people living in insanitary conditions live in Southern Asia.

UNICEF and WHO express concern in regards to growth of children's death rate due to diarrhea, which is one of the main reasons of death in developing countries, where poverty, bad sanitary conditions, shortage of portable water and the increased risk of infections dominate.

"Today we possess all spectrum of technical opportunities to improve sanitary level in the majority of the regions," WHO General Director, Margaret Chan said. More and more states join active actions on provision with portable water and worthy sanitary conditions of the poorest layers of the population. Such measures are paramount in struggle against poverty.
