Astana. February 11. Kazakhstan Today - The number of saiga reached 81 thousand in Kazakhstan in 2009 as compared to 1 million heads in 2000, the agency reports citing the press service of the Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan.

"Preservation of saiga has become the national goal as their number decreased in the beginning of 2000 from one million to 21 thousand."

At the same time, "as a result of Wood and Hunting Committee measures, population of saiga has been increasing for the last five years." "In 2009, the number of saiga was 81 thousand.

"In connection with decrease in number of saiga, the Kazakhstan government has undertaken some measures on preservation of saiga in Kazakhstan. 14 million KZT was allocated from the republican budget in 2001 to protect population of saiga. Volume of financing in the following years has been annually increasing. In 2007 - 2009, it amounted to more than 200 million KZT annually."
