Panda "father" for 30 years

4 pm is dinner time in the panda enclosure. Ma Tao puts the dinner he has prepared at the door of the panda house - eggs, porridge, steamed corn bread and bamboo shoots. The 20-year-old giant panda, Gugu, will eat them with a good appetite .

In 1989, 19-year-old Ma Tao came to the Beijing Zoo Panda Pavilion. His duties included preparing food, sanitation, artificial breeding, animal training and behavioral observation. After years of learning about these incredible animals, he is now an excellent breeder.
Now there are 13 members in the Beijing Zoo panda team. Many of them graduated from animal breeding majors at university, but in practice, they still need to accumulate experience.
Traditionally, we use one-on-one mentoring, to make sure that every new employee has an experienced mentor to guide them, and also technical communication between peers," said Ma.
"The oldest panda here is 'Dadi', born in 1992. The youngest was born in 2015," said Ma, as he introduced the 17 giant pandas at the Beijing Zoo.
Both visitors from China and further afield love the giant panda for its cute charm. However, contrary to its docile appearance, it is a savage animal. The Beijing Zoo included the giant panda in a list of 27 wild animals for public awareness. It is incredibly territorial and may attack if it feels threatened, so the breeder always has to be careful and keep a safe distance.
As a national Class I protected species of China, the giant panda has the title of "national treasure". Compared with other species, it is more difficult to breed a panda.
In addition to hard work, the most important thing for the job is to take care of them with love," said Ma.
For example, if you find that the panda doesn't have an appetite, you need to think over what may be the issue, and whether any external conditions are interfering with its appetite."
After years of knowing these pandas, Ma is familiar with the temperament of each one. "You have to think about it like you were a panda, , and take care of it as if it is your child," Ma said, "To love them, not spoil them, with scientific methods."
My job is just ordinary. It gets lots of attention because I work with 'national treasures'," Ma said modestly., But without the work of people like Ma, the giant panda could never return to the wild.
In 2015, the fourth national giant panda survey released by authorities showed that by the end of 2013, the number of wild giant pandas in China reached 1,864, the number of captive giant pandas reached 375, and the number of protected habitat areas for pandas increased to 67.
Due to these efforts, in 2016, the International Union for Conservation of Nature announced that pandas had been reclassified from "endangered" to "vulnerable", a great step forward.
When Ma joined the Beijing Zoo, there were only three resident giant pandas. Witnessing the zoo conditions improving and the number of newly-born pandas growing, Ma is overjoyed.

Over 300 babies born in flood-stricken areas in Kazakhstan
325 babies were born in the regions of Kazakhstan that declared recently a local state of emergency due to flooding. 387 pregnant women are under the doctor’s care, Kazinform News Agency reports.
Most babies were born in Kostanay, Aktobe and West Kazakhstan regions since the beginning of the floods, Aigerim Urazaliyeva, the Kazakh Healthcare Ministry’s official spokesperson, said.
5,035 children from flood-hit regions are staying at temporary shelters of which 62 were taken to hospitals.
She noted over 1,000 people sought psychological assistance.
7,617 flood victims have chronic diseases. All of them are monitored by health workers, she added.

2 schools shifted to online learning amid flooding in N Kazakhstan

347 pupils of two schools switched to online learning amid flooding in North Kazakhstan, Kazinform News Agency reports.
Schools were temporarily shifted to online teaching in Zarechnyi and Pokrovka villages as the River Yessil overflowed.
All villagers of Zarechnyi were evacuated amid flood risks. Ice jams triggered flooding in Pokrovka village leaving tens of homes on Beregovaya Street underwater.

First Kazakh Senate Speaker passes away

An outstanding statesman, the first Speaker of the Senate of the Parliament of Kazakhstan (1996-1999), Baigeldi Omirbek has passed away today in Astana, Kazinform News Agency cites the Kazakh Senate’s press service.
Baigeldi Omirbek was born in 1939 in Dzhambul region, KazSSR.
Baigeldi Omirbek served as the deputy of the Parliament of Kazakhstan of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th convocations. He worked at the Senate for more than 16 years.

Year of Kazakhstan Tourism in China officially opens in Beijing

The Year of Kazakhstan Tourism in China has been opened in a grand ceremony at the China National Opera House in Beijing, Kazinform News Agency reports.
As part of the ceremony, an ethno-auyl (village) and the cultural events are being presented before the China National Opera House building.
Addressing the guests and participants of the event were Deputy Prime Minister - Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan Murat Nurtleu, head of the Publicity Department of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party Li Shulei, Kazakh Sport and Tourism Minister Yermek Marzhikpayev and Chinese Culture and Tourism Minister Sun Yeli.
Opening the festive gala concert was the theatrical choreographic performance ‘Yer saltanaty’ by the soloists of the Abay Opera House, artists of the Astana Ballet Theatre and the ‘Shattyq’ Dance Theatre.
People's artist of Kazakhstan Roza Rymbaeva, honored artist of Kazakhstan Mayra Mukhamedkyzy, opera singer Zarina Altynbaeva, ethno-rock group ‘Ulytau’, choir group of Abai Kazakh State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater, ensembles ‘Serper’ and ‘Sazgen Sazy’ and the ballet troupe ‘Astana Ballet’ will take part in the concert dedicated to the opening of the Year of Kazakhstan Tourism in China.
