Quantity of HIV infected in East Europe and Central Asia reached 1.6 million - UN

The quantity of HIV infected in East Europe and Central Asia reached 1.6 million, the agency reports referring to UN press service.

Almaty. May 4. Kazakhstan Today - The quantity of HIV infected in East Europe and Central Asia reached 1.6 million, the agency reports referring to UN news service.

According to the news service, " a number of people living with HIV has increased by almost three times: from 630 thousand up to 1.6 million people in East Europe and Central Asia during 2001 - 2007."

According to UN, quantity of new cases of HIV infections registered in 2007 has increased in comparison with 2006 in Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, the Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine.

The news service informs that the issue of HIV/AIDS in East Europe and Central Asia will be considered on May 3-5 in Moscow at the second regional conference concerning HIV/AIDS, which will be held under the aegis of the joint UN Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) with participation of about two thousand delegates from 50 countries of the world. During three days they will exchange the up-to-date experience in struggle against HIV in the region and will define further steps in this sphere.

Acting at the press conference, prior to the meeting in Moscow, the chief state health officer of the Russian Federation Gennady Onishchenko paid attention to "feminization" of the epidemics in the region. He emphasized that there is a tendency of growth of HIV infection among women in East Europe and Central Asia countries. As a consequence, the number of children born with HIV infection grows as well, the news service informs.

"There are 40 thousand HIV infected women in Russia who gave birth to children. 20 thousand children are under medical supervision in order to define whether they are infected. About 1060 out of 20 thousand are HIV infected.

The conference on HIV/AIDS in East Europe and Central Asia, according to the news service, will become a step to global discussion of AIDS problems: in June, 2008 the UN General Assembly will sum up performance of the Declaration on adherence to struggle against HIV/AIDS and will plan further actions.

According to the news service, during preparation for the General Assembly, the chairman of the United Nations Ban Ki Moon has already sent the members of the United Nations the new report with the review of the course of performance of the Declaration. He informed that in December, 2007 quantity of HIV infected in the world has reached 33.2 million people. In 2007 about 2.5 million new infection cases have been registered and 2.1 million people died of AIDS. A share of HIV infected of pregnant women receiving antiretrovirus treatment for prevention of spread of infection from mother to her child has increased from 14 % in 2005 up to 34 % in 2007.
