The reason of mass death of saiga in the Western Kazakhstan area is, presumably, poisoning. The chairman of Wood and Hunting Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan, Erlan Nysanbaev, informed today in an interview to journalists, the agency reports.

Astana. May 21. Kazakhstan Today - The reason of mass death of saiga in the Western Kazakhstan area is, presumably, poisoning. The chairman of Wood and Hunting Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan, Erlan Nysanbaev, informed today in an interview to journalists, the agency reports.

"Saiga death toll, as of May 20, is 1200. As of today, we have the information from the committee members working there that about 2 thousand saiga died," E. Nysanbaev informed.

"According to the examination, the animals had swollen stomach, froth of greenish color, and diarrhea, which happens during poisoning." He also informed, "the reasons are being found out."

The press service of the Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan informed, some days before the dead bodies of saiga were found, "the inspectors saw grey fog, though the weather in this area was clear and cloudless on May 15 - 17, 2010."

"There are no enterprises nearby as saiga lives in the deserted steppes," E. Nysanbaev said

"The reasons and the damage will be found out. If there is anyone guilty, a criminal case will be instigated," E. Nysanbaev informed.
