Saiga death toll in Western Kazakhstan reached 1200 heads

Astana. May 21. Kazakhstan Today - Saiga death toll in the Western Kazakhstan area has reached 1200 heads, mostly females, the agency reports citing the press service of the Emergency Ministry of Kazakhstan.

According to the press service, there was a message about finding of about 100 heads of dead saiga on May 18. The commission has been created to find out the causes of death of the animals. "According to the commission, on the first day of inspection, about 1200 heads of dead saiga, basically females, were found in the territory of the Zhanibek area (rural district Borsy)."

"Earlier, on May 15 - 17, 2010, inspectors saw grey fog, though the weather in this area was clear and cloudless." "After external examination of the dead animals, the inspectors saw that the animals had swollen stomach, froth of greenish color, and diarrhea. The animals have been sent to the veterinary laboratory for thorough examination."

The Agriculture Ministry informed the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the State Office of Public Prosecutor, the Emergency Ministry, the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the Ministry of Science and Education, the Committee of National Security, the Committee of State Inspection in Agrarian and Industrial Complex of the Agriculture Ministry, and akimat of the Western Kazakhstan area of mass death of the animals.
