Session of ministers of UNESCAP member states started its work

Almaty. May 21. Kazakhstan Today - Today in Almaty during the 63rd session of the Economic and Social Commission of the United Nations for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) member states the ministers' session started its work with the participation of the Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev, the agency reports.

The Kazakhstan leader and the UN Secretary General Sir Ban Ki-moon will make welcoming speeches to the session participants.

During the session it is planned to elect the Chairman of the 63rd UNESCAP session. The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Marat Tazhin is expected to hold this post. Today during the meeting of the special session on Achievement of the Objectives of Development of Millennium of the UNESCAP Region and the plenary session at which the ministers will discuss political issues of the region will take place.

For the first time, the regional commission of the United Nations holds exit session in Central Asia. During the session the ministerial meeting of UNESCAP member states, the sessions of the UNESCAP senior officials, Asian-Pacific business forum, Economic forum SPECA, and business-exhibition are planned to take place.

More than 400 delegates including the prime ministries and the ministries from 62 countries - ESCAP members are participating in the session.

ESCAP, called to promote social and economic development of the Asian and Pacific countries, their cooperation among themselves and with the third countries, was founded in 1947. 51 states of Asia and the Pacific Ocean region are its members. The 62nd ESCAP session took place in April 2006 in Jakarta (Indonesia). In 2007 ESCAP, the largest regional commission of the United Nations, will be 60 years old.
