Almaty. February 26. Kazakhstan Today - The joint research of the American and Kazakhstan scientists shows that the key to restoration of population of sturgeon in the Caspian Sea is to decrease its catch, instead of increase of its stock, the agency reports citing the press release of the results of the scientific research, published on EurekAlert site.

The first research of the condition of population of sturgeon in the Caspian Sea has shown that the current norms of catch are four-five times higher than it shoudl be for maintenance of the number of population of sturgeon. The results of the research, which will be published in the next issue of Conservation Biology, show that the strategy of preservation of sturgeon should be directed at reduction of catch of adult individuals, instead of growing of young population of fish.

The quantitative analysis was done by an unprecedented cooperation of scientists from the USA and Kazakhstan. The data used in the research has been collected in the river Ural, the unique river that connects the Caspian Sea and where the sturgeon can move freely past dams.
