UN allocated $8 million to government of China to render assistance to earthquake victims

Almaty. May 23. Kazakhstan Today - On May 21, the The UN resident coordinator in China Halid Malik transferred the Chinese authorities the check for $8 million intended for rendering assistance to the population of China suffered from the earthquake. These means have been allocated from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund, the agency reports referring to the UN news center.

The UN representative stated that monetary contribution is a display of solidarity of international community with Chinese people. He has highly assessed actions of the government of China directed at rescue of people and liquidation of the earthquake consequences. H. Malik has confirmed readiness of the United Nations to render further support.

The UN Humanitarian Office continues to help victims. UNICEF has directed to the earthquake-affected regions the experts who assess humanitarian needs and render psychological help to children.

World Food Program (WFP) plans to deliver the second cargo with rice, flour and vegetable oil up to the end of this week to Sichuan Province. These food stuffs will be enough to feed 100 thousand people within three weeks.

The UN Office of High Commissioner for Refugees has responded to China's request to help those who remained without any shelter. In the near future the Office will send to the region 11 thousand tents.
