UN first meeting on reaction to world food crisis took place

The first meeting of the UN target group on reaction to world food crisis took place on May, 12 in the UN headquarters in New York under the presidency of the Un Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, the agency repots referring to the UN news center.

Almaty. May 14. Kazakhstan Today - The first meeting of the UN target group on reaction to world food crisis took place on May, 12 in the UN headquarters in New York under the presidency of the Un Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, the agency repots referring to the UN news center.

The report that the UN press secretary presented on behalf of Ban Ki-moon emphasized that the developed situation is basically connected with world demand for foodstuffs that exceeds supply. However, he considers that the reasons of crisis have complex character and its consequences are varied. The report noted that the solution to this problem demands international efforts and coordination of actions at high level.

The main task of specially created target group consists in promoting universal and uniform approach to solution of global problems caused by rise in prices for foodstuffs. Today the members of the group have focused their attention on development of the universal strategy.

This strategy should become the short-term and long-term plan of measures including food aid, social protection and development of agriculture.

The members of the group have analyzed the reasons of crisis and have stated readiness to present the elements of the future strategy at the summit of high level on world food safety, which will be held in Rome on June 3-5.

The group that includes the chairmen of the UN institutions and the international financial organizations recommended the states not to take advantage of the current crisis and to cancel restrictions on grain export. The group members have called them to consider an opportunity of deliveries of foodstuffs necessary for humanitarian purposes, for example, for realization of projects of World Food Program.
