Astana. July 5. Kazakhstan Today - On July 3 in Kazakhstan in National Research Cardiac Surgery Center conducted the first unique surgery operation on implantation of an artificial heart to the patient in need of transplantation of donor heart, Kazakhstan Today reports.

The operation was conducted by the chief cardiac surgeon of the country, Yuri Pya together with foreign colleagues from Germany. The operation lasted for about 9 hours, the press service of the National Medical Holding informed.

"We have not done organ transplantation in our country yet, though, in principle, physicians are ready for it - both general surgeons and cardio surgeons. That is, medical issues are resolved, there are all possibilities. But there is a socio-legal and moral side. Our society is not ready for organ donation, the mentality does not allow to implement it widely. But despite these problems, there are patients, and we must help them. Today, one of the solutions is to replace the heart entirely with the artificial one," Yuri Pya said at the press-conference on Wednesday.

In National Medical Holding, the conducted surgery operation on the heart transplantation is the third in the world with the use of such devices. The first operation was carried out in Germany, the second one was conducted in the United States.

The artificial heart was implanted to a 61-year-old patient, a resident of Astana, who suffers from severe pathology of the cardiovascular system. He repeatedly received inpatient treatment, previously refused the proposed surgery, but taking into account the deterioration in the dynamics due to the progression of heart failure he was hospitalized in the National Research Cardiac Surgery Center.

The essence of the surgery operation is complete removal of the right and left ventricles of the heart, followed by implantation of two auxiliary pumps blood HEARTWARE - artificial ventricles, which are implanted in the atria. Pumps are capable of pumping up to 10 liters of blood per minute, which corresponds to the normal operation of the heart.

According to Yuri Pya, the patient's state of health is stable to the moment and his body has to adapt.

In addition, Yuri Pya emphasized that such operations will be conducted in the Kazakhstan for free within the framework of guaranteed free medical care. In the world the average cost for it is about half a million U.S. dollars.

From 2011 in the National Research Cardiac Surgery Center performes unique surgery operations to implant devices of auxiliary blood circulation - an artificial left ventricle of various modifications which are implanted for 37 patients with severe chronic heart failure. These innovative technologies are an alternative and the only treatment option for patients with terminal heart failure.

Implantation of the device of this type allows you to maintain a long-term patient's blood circulation, which allows him to wait for the donor organ.
