Universal hand prosthesis designed by Kazakhstan's students

The authors became the finalists of the republican robotics competition.
The final of the contest of research and creative projects on educational robotics among children and youth aged from 10 to 21 years - KazRoboProject-2018 is held in Astana.

Student of schools and clubs all over the country presented their best developments at the contest which takes place at a base of the Nazarbayev Centre.

KazRobotics Kazakhstan’s Federation of Educational and Sporting Robotics is an organizer of the event. And the general partner is Fund of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan – Yelbasy.

Thus, the students of 1-9 grades Alexey Kurichev, Mark Sergeyev, Valery Panfilov and Daniil Belov from Aktau presented a project called "Universal hand prosthesis, controlled by the neuro interface". The project is developed on the basis of the educational construction set Robotrek.

The authors told the project’s aim is to render an assistance for the amputee people herewith, the using of the prosthesis needs no the insertion of special sensors in contrast to the bionic prosthesis.

Representatives of Robotrack Aktau club designed two models of hand, one of which is put on the human’s arm and manipulated by reading thoughts through the neuro-interface.

The designers decided to make a universal prosthesis which is cheaper than the foreign analogs. It should be noted the cost of the bionic hand prosthesis is 14 million tenge and the insertion of special sensors worth another 250 thousand dollars.

According to the authors, the versatility of the design lies in the fact that it is worn over the limbs, which ensures its operation before the formation of the stump.

The second prosthesis is expected to be improved for putting it on the hand. The designing of the project took about a year. The development of hand’s appearance took a lot of time.

The students believe the prosthesis will help deaf and dumb people as well. It is possible to train such people in the study of sign language with the help of buttons and gestures. The initial cost of the project is 400-600 thousand tenge, with mass production, according to the authors, the cost will decrease by 50-60%.

In the future, the contestants plan to patent their project.

As the organizers believe the contest goals development and popularization of the educational and sporting robotics among the young generation of Kazakhstan.

One more feature of the KazRoboProject-2018 is Pancakebot. The robot designed by students of school #11 Artem Malykh and Aypara Syzdykova from Pavlodar region is able to make pancakes. The robot consists of two parts: the first part pours the dough onto the pancake maker; the second part turns the pancakes and already puts them into the plate. Between them, they communicate via Bluetooth and send messages to a friend, "the children said.

Moreover, the authors intend to send messages to the robot via mobile phone. The internal resources and outward of the project may be improved in the future due to sponsors.

It should be noted the KazRoboProject-2018 goals finding out best projects in the regions and form the national team to participate in the competition of the republican level. Besides, it is important to attract the attention of the professional institutions to the talented children.

The winner of the competition will be awarded robotics construction kits for framing more interesting projects in the future.
