Roadside bomb kills 19 civilians in south Afghanistan

Astana. December 7. Kazakhstan Today - Roadside bomb kills 19 civilians in south Afghanistan, Kazakhstan Today reports.

The deaths come as funerals took place for the victims of Tuesday's devastating bomb attacks, BBC reported.

The vehicle was driving in the province's volatile Sangin district - a Taliban stronghold - Helmand spokesman Daud Ahmadi was quoted as saying.

The dead are said to include women and children, many from the same family.

The deaths come amid mourning for 59 people, mainly Shia worshippers, who were killed in twin bomb attacks in the country on Tuesday.

President Karzai cut short a trip to Europe to return to Kabul on Wednesday, where he will visit wounded and bereaved from the worst incident - the suicide bombing of a Shia shrine on the holiest day of the Shia calendar which killed 55.

Coupled with a smaller bombing in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, the attacks have raised fears that the violence in Afghanistan may be taking on a new sectarian character.
