Realization of Almaty Program of Actions discussed at 63rd session of UN General Assembly

Almaty. October 3. Kazakhstan Today - A two-day plenary meeting devoted to the intermediate term review of the course of realization of the Almaty Program of Actions began yesterday within the 63rd session of the UN General Assembly. It was accepted in August, 2003 in Kazakhstan at the International Ministerial Conference of Landlocked Developing Countries, the agency reports referring to the UN news center.

The Almaty Program of Actions is the first global document directed at meeting special demands of landlocked developing countries. It contains specific measures and recommendations concerning policy in the field of transit transportations, development of transport infrastructure and assistance to development of commerce. The program provides rendering to this group of countries financial and technical help.

According to the United Nations, the landlocked developing states are the poorest developing countries with the lowest growth rates. As a rule, they in very big degree depend on rather limited range of sources of export. The group of the landlocked developing countries includes Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. In total there are 31 states.

Today, the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon informed at the meeting that last week the UN member states discussed the course of achievement of Millennium Development Goals and promised to allocate $16 billion for acceleration of development.

The UN Secretary General stated that the international community should consider economic vulnerability of the landlocked developing countries, facilitate access of their goods to the world markets, and render them technical and financial support directed at overcoming problems connected with their geographical isolation. The United Nations Secretary General emphasized that the landlocked developing states require special support and partnership from the whole international community.
