Turkmenistan, European Union expand cooperation

The President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov and the EU Commissioner for Power Andris Piebalgs signed the memorandum of mutual understanding and cooperation in the field of energy, following the results of negotiations on Monday, the agency reports.

Ashkhabad. May 28. Kazakhstan Today - The President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov and the EU Commissioner for Power Andris Piebalgs signed the memorandum of mutual understanding and cooperation in the field of energy, following the results of negotiations on Monday, the agency reports.

During the meeting the parties paid special attention to cooperation in the area of power, having emphasized its perspective character in view of economic and resource potential of Turkmenistan in strengthening world energy security.

"Turkmenistan - the largest exporter of natural gas from Central Asia - can become an attractive object for European investments into development of new oil-and-gas deposits of the country," the EU Commissioner stated. He noted that EU is interesting for Turkmenistan as a commodity market of its energy carriers.

EU delegation members were invited to visit gas deposit Dovletabad where modern infrastructure of thermal power station is now being created. They took part in the ceremony of laying gas compressor station Dovletabad-2 and commissioning of compressor station Dovletabad-3.

Construction of both objects has been charged to Belgian company ENEX that has constructed in the country a lot of important projects.

According to the President Berdymuhamedov, after completion of all works volumes of supply of 'blue fuel' will increase in both directions - Russia and further to Europe, which will significantly assist strengthening of energy security of the countries consuming Turkmen gas.

"Possessing huge resources of hydrocarbon raw materials, Turkmenistan is capable to provide with gas all projects proposed by international gas pipe lines," Berdymuhamedov said, having launched construction of up-to-date compressor station, productivity of which is 20 billion cubic meters of gas a year.
