Almaty. June 18. Kazakhstan Today - The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon arrived in London where he took part in BBC headquarters in the opening ceremony on June 16 of the memorial devoted to the journalists who have perished while engaged in the execution of their official duties. The monument made of glass and steel has been established in the center of the capital of Great Britain, the agency reports referring to the UN news center.

According to UNESCO, last year 177 mass media representatives were killed. Unprecedented number of journalists have been attacked or killed in Iraq. Today attacks on journalists have ceased to be a rarity. Certainly, journalist can become victims of jealousy, be killed in accidents or by a stray bullet. However, as a rule, deaths of mass media representatives are not accidental. Carrying out their professional duty, in particular, covering operations, social conflicts or natural disasters, they endanger their lives. The biggest alarm is, however, those cases when journalists become a target because of the materials they have published.
