EU, UN Refugee Agency finished realization of project on strengthening refugee shelters and refugee protection system in Central Asia

The European Union (EU) and the UN Refugee Agency finished realization of the project on strengthening the system of refugee shelters and refugee protection in Central Asia, the UN respresentative informed at the press conference today.

Astana. March 28. Kazakhstan Today - The European Union (EU) and the UN Refugee Agency finished realization of the project on strengthening the system of refugee shelters and refugee protection in Central Asia, the UN respresentative informed at the press conference today.

"Our project has helped the governments of the region to improve the legislation and activity in the sphere of granting refugee shelters of the international standards," the chairman of the representation of the Office of UN High Commissioner for Refugees Cesar Dubon noted.

Central Asia is characterized by quite high level of population migration, "being simultaneously both transit and the destination points for migrants and refugees."

The project with the total budget of 1 million 154 thousand euro "has supported the Central Asian states in creation of effective mechanisms of protection of refugees in the context of migratory policy. The main purpose was maintenance of observance of human rights in realization of the mechanisms of the work with refugees."

"Four basic components constituted the basis of the project: escalation of potential of the state bodies, increase of the level of knowledge of the public, involvement of civil society, regional cooperation and exchange of experience," Sezar Dubon said.

The regional conference summed up the results of the project on March 19 in Astana with participation of 30 representatives of the countries of the region.
