World Population Day is celebrated today

World Population Day is celebrated today. This date appeared in the calendar of the United Nations in 1989 at the initiative of Council of Managing Directors of the UN Development Program (UNDP) after, on July 11, 1987, population of the earth has exceeded 5 billion people. Since then the holiday has become international and is celebrated annually, the agency reports referring to the UN News Center.

Almaty. July 11. Kazakhstan Today - World Population Day is celebrated today. This date appeared in the calendar of the United Nations in 1989 at the initiative of Council of Managing Directors of the UN Development Program (UNDP) after, on July 11, 1987, population of the earth has exceeded 5 billion people. Since then the holiday has become international and is celebrated annually, the agency reports referring to the UN News Center.

In connection with this date the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and the Executive Director of UN Population Fund (UNFPA) Thoraya Obeid made a report calling upon activization of actions directed at eradication of extreme poverty and famine, strengthening of health of people and improvement of life on the planet.

The UN Secretary General has urged to concentrate attention to exclusive importance of family planning for successful achievement of the development goals formulated in Millennium Declaration.

S. Obeid called upon to consider the question of family planning as a step in expansion of opportunities of women, encouragement of equality between women and men and effective means of struggle against poverty. "We address all states with an appeal to provide access to reproductive health by 2015 and to support the obligation with political will and financial resources. The time has come to make protection of reproductive health one of our priorities," S. Obeid stated.
