Powerful earthquake hit New Zealand
Almaty. February 22. Kazakhstan Today - 6.3-magnitude earthquake has struck Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island, Kazakhstan Today reports.
New Zealand's leader says at least 65 people have been killed in the earthquake that hit the city of Christchurch, The Associated Press reported.
Prime Minister John Key told reporters in the stricken city that the death toll was expected to rise further.
A 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit Christchurch around lunchtime on Tuesday, collapsing buildings and sending bricks and other heavy debris toppling into busy city streets.
The tremor, which hit at 1251 (2351 GMT on Monday) only 10km (6.2 miles) south-east of the city at a depth of 5km (3.1 miles), caused widespread destruction, BBC News informed.
The fire service said numerous people were trapped in buildings, and a state of emergency has been declared.

Second wave of floods hits N Kazakhstan region
Due to the second wave of flooding, water level rose again with the overflow at 278 centimeters having increased by 21 centimeters," Kanat Duzelbayev said.
A number of villages in Kyzylzhar district and micro-districts Podgora, Kozhevenny, Zarechny, Kossogor are still under water, with 2,886 residential buildings affected by the flood. A total of 14,388 people have been evacuated in the region, with 1,037 accommodated in temporary shelters. All of them are provided with meals and essential supplies. 149 families have already received lump-sum social payment. 470 tons of humanitarian aid were sent to the region from Astana, Almaty, East Kazakhstan, Kyzylorda, Zhambyl, Pavlodar, and Akmola regions, as well as from Russia’s Omsk," said Duzelbayev.
