Kazakhstan to present counter-terrorism code at UN General Assembly's 73rd session

The 73rd session of the UN General Assembly opened in New York. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres mentioned the Organization's priorities and called on the world leaders, who will arrive in New York this week, to be ready for cooperation. The UN leaders are concerned about the ongoing conflicts, political confrontations, the deepening humanitarian crisis in some hotbeds of tension, press service of the Kazakh Foreign Ministry reports.

The theme of the session is 'Making the United Nations relevant to all people: global leadership and shared responsibilities for peaceful, equitable and sustainable societies'. The main priorities of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly are the issues of further reforms of the UN, to prevent conflicts, to ensure human rights, gender equality and eliminate inequality in the world. The session's agenda included up to 175 issues in the following sectors: ensuring international peace and security, sustainable development, human rights, humanitarian aid, disarmament, promoting justice and developing international law.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration of Ecuador Marнa Fernanda Espinosa was selected as Chairman of the General Assembly for the 73rd session. During her chairmanship within a year, she intends to place priority attention on the issues of migration, environmental protection, rights of disabled people, gender equality and promoting sustainable development.

The important place in the General Assembly's work is also taken by the issue of facilitating economic growth and accepting global agreements on migration and refugees.

It is reported that during the first days of its new session, mostly procedure issues will be solved, including those issues related to the allocation of the agenda items on the main six Committees of the Assembly. Annual general discussions start on September 25 and last until October 1.

A delegation of the Republic of Kazakhstan led by Kazakh Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov will take part in high-level general debates of the UN General Assembly. In the period from September 24 to September 29, a number of multilateral and bilateral events are planned. The Kazakh Foreign Minister addresses on September 28," they said in the Kazakh Foreign Ministry.


The presentation of the Code of Conduct 'Towards reaching a terrorism-free world' will be the centerpiece for Kazakhstan on the sidelines of the session. The document was designed at the initiative of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev. The Code's main aim is to create a wide international coalition of partner-states in counter-terrorism and to reach a world free of terrorism by 2045 by the UN's 100th anniversary.

The Kazakh delegation will take part in various multilateral meetings, including the opening of general debates of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly; an informal meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Conference on interaction and confidence-building measures in Asia (CICA) during which chairmanship will be given to Tajikistan from China; a meeting off Foreign Ministers of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) member states; a high-level session devoted to International day for the total elimination of nuclear weapons; a number of sessions regarding the UN Security Council, an informal meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Economic Cooperation Organization; a Ministerial Meeting of the member states of the Group of Developing Countries that do not have access to the Sea; a ministerial meeting of the UN Alliance of Civilizations Group of Friends.

Under the US chairmanship, including President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, a number of open sessions of the UN Security Council will be held in which Kazakhstan is a non-permanent member over a 2017-2018 period.

A range of large-scale events regarding peacekeeping, education, culture, healthcare, in particular, high-level meetings to eliminate TB are of great attention. It is planned to solemnly open exhibitions devoted to the 90th anniversary if Chingiz Aitmatov in the head office of the United Nations.

Head of the Kazakh Foreign Ministry Kairat Abdrakhmanov held a number of bilateral meetings with UN officials, Foreign Ministers and representatives of the US and international business.

In general, the UN General Assembly's session gives the opportunity to promote the realization of a number of foreign political initiatives of Kazakh president Nursultan Nazarbayev in the sectors of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and disarmament, peacekeeping, sustainable social and economic development and the UN 2030 Agenda.
