Over 9 tons of drugs seized in CSTO countries' int'l operation

More than 22 thousand of law enforcement bodies took part in the operation.
On September 15, the International Anti-Drug Operation Canal-Red Barkhane, with the participation of anti-drug agencies of the member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), and the Islamic Republic of Iran and the People's Republic of China, was completed. As a result, more than 9 tons of drugs and over 2.5 thousand ammunitions were seized, press service of the Kazakh Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) reports.

Interaction and coordination of law enforcement bodies of the participating countries were carried out by the International Coordination Headquarters, located in Shymkent. It should be noted above 22,000 law enforcement officers took part in the operation.

According to the MIA more than 9 tons of drugs, particularly 5 tons of opiates, 38 kilograms of heroin, 2 tons of synthetic drugs, 800 kilograms of hashish and more than 830 kilograms of marijuana were seized.

In addition, 115 items of firearms, about 2.5 thousand ammunitions, material assets and other items prohibited for transportation, worth more than 127 thousand US dollars were confiscated.

Besides, 719 drug crimes detected, about seven thousand criminal cases initiated, over 500 citizens are brought to administrative responsibility for illegal drug operations.

The European Union, the OSCE, the Eurasian Group on Combating Money Laundering and the Financing of Terrorism, the United Nations Regional Office for Drugs and Crime, CARICC and others representatives of international organizations sat in.

Canal-Red Barkhane operation goals suppression of opiate smuggling channels, suppression of the activities of transnational drug groups, legalization of drug incomes, removal of arms, ammunition and explosives from illegal circulation.

Moreover, the operation is aimed at counteraction to the illegal cultivation of cannabis in the Kyzylorda region and harvesting of wild hemp in the Zhambyl region.

The operation engaged 4 Tiger armored vehicles, 6 Buggy class vehicles, over 15 various off-road vehicles, MI-171E helicopter as well.
