Ex-head of the Statistics Agency still hiding in the UAE

Astana. July 24. Kazakhstan Today - The former chairman of the Statistics Agency of Kazakhstan, Anar Meshimbaeva is still hiding in the United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan Today reports.

"We sent a reminder to the United Arab Emirates (on extradition A. Meshimbaeva). They are thinking", Johann Merkel, Deputy Prosecutor General told reporters today.

He also noted that the two countries need to exchange instruments of ratification. "Right now it is a holiday (Ramadan), probably after the holiday it will happen", he said.

We recall that in January 2011, ex-chairman of the Statistics Agency A. Meshimbaeva was declared wanted by Interpol. Earlier, Agency for Fighting Economic and Corruption Crimes (financial police) opened a criminal case against A. Meshimbaeva who was accused of involvement in the embezzlement of budget funds allocated for the purchase of the census instruments. For a national census of the state there was allocated 1 billion 144 million tenge. The investigation established that in fact the national population census was carried out for 379 million tenge, the remaining amount - 764.8 million tenge was abducted by the agency officials and heads of private enterprises.
