Silvio Berlusconi to face underage sex charges

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi will face court over underage sex claims, a judicial official said, Kazakhstan Today reports.

Almaty. February 9. Kazakhstan Today - Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi will face court over underage sex claims, a judicial official said, Kazakhstan Today reports.

The case centres around allegations he paid for sex with a 17-year-old girl, Sunday Mail reported.

Milan prosecutors will today (Wednesday) formally ask Mr Berlusconi stand trial immediately in connection with an investigation of his relations with an underage girl.

Mr Berlusconi is alleged to have paid for sex with a 17-year-old girl and then intervened to get her released from custody in a separate case, BBC News reported.

The woman, known as Ruby, is now 18 and denies that they had sex.

A Moroccan nightclub dancer whose real name is Karima El Mahroug, she was detained for alleged theft by police but freed after a phone call from the prime minister.

Although frequenting prostitutes is not a crime in Italy, having sex with one under the age of 18 is an offence that commands a prison sentence.

Mr Berlusconi denies the sex allegations, insisting they are politically motivated.

He has previously admitted calling the police after Ms Mahroug's arrest but says he did nothing wrong and acted out of pity.

Milan Chief Prosecutor Edmondo Bruti Liberati told reporters that the inquiry into the two allegations was almost complete.

Documents submitted to parliament last month contained witness statements and wiretap transcripts indicating that dinners at the villa were attended by large numbers of women, and led on to striptease and sex play, The Guardian informed.

Under Italian law the age of consent is 14. But paying for the services of a prostitute aged less than 18 is an offence, punishable by up to three years in prison; to secure a conviction, the prosecution does not have to prove full sexual intercourse.

The judge appointed to oversee the case will have five days in which to decide for or against an indictment. But she can opt to set up a pre-trial hearing to hear the evidence relating to the juvenile prostitution charge before reaching a decision.
