Solution to problems in Central Asia in strengthening safety in Tajikistan - EU

The European Union sees solution to problems in Central Asia in strengthening safety, including effective struggle against illegal circulation of drugs in Tajikistan. The EU Special Representative for Central Asia Pierre Morel informed on Wednesday at the end of his two-day visit of Dushanbe, the agency reports referring to information agency CA-News.

Kazakhstan Today - The European Union sees solution to problems in Central Asia in strengthening safety, including effective struggle against illegal circulation of drugs in Tajikistan. The EU Special Representative for Central Asia Pierre Morel informed on Wednesday at the end of his two-day visit of Dushanbe, the agency reports referring to information agency CA-News.

According to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan, the EU Special Representative for Central Asia Pierre Morel finished his two-day visit to Dushanbe where he held negotiations with the President of the Republic, Emomali Rahmon, the Foreign Minister, Hamrohon Zarifi and Director of Drug Control Agency, Rustam Nazarov, on Tuesday.

Pierre Morel informed on the work of EU in the sphere of strengthening of borders and struggle against illegal circulation of drugs in the Central Asian countries. "Speaking about the short-term plans of the European Union in the region, he said that the organization focuses on security issues, including illegal circulation of drugs," Drug Control Agency informed.

Understanding seriousness of strengthening of safety and stability in Central Asia, the European Union plans to hold the meeting of Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the EU member states and Central Asian countries in Paris on September 18-19, 2008.

The EU along with the United Nations Department on Drugs and Criminality planned to organize in Dushanbe the meeting of Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the Central Asian countries with participation of the representatives from the USA, Russian Federation, China and Finland, as OSCE chairman in October, 2008. At this meeting its participants will discuss questions of control of borders, struggle against illegal circulation of drugs and development of strategy of cooperation in this direction.

During the meetings problems of social and economic and hydro-power development in Tajikistan and the region were also considered.
