Kazakhstan failed to execute most of recommendations of UN Committee Against Torture

Almaty. December 10. Kazakhstan Today - The Director of the Kazakhstan International Bureau for Human Rights and Rule of Law, Evgeny Zhovtis, said at the press conference on Tuesday that Kazakhstan has failed to execute most part of recommendations of the UN Committee Against Torture, the agency reports.

The legal expert informed that Kazakhstan joined the UN Convention Against Torture in 1998. According to the convention, the member countries should present once in seven years to the special-purpose body the report on how the country implements the convention. In 2001 Kazakhstan presented the first report. The UN Committee Against Tortures gave Kazakhstan 16 recommendations.

The next report of Kazakhstan on the results of the work for 7 years was considered in the beginning of the last month in Geneva.

"By our assessment, which we presented in Geneva, Kazakhstan has executed only five out of 16 recommendations. 11 recommendations have not been executed," the legal expert noted.

"The country needs to take these recommendations of the committee seriously. Kazakhstan will have to present the UN Committee Against Torture the report on what the country has done concerning 4 recommendations."
