Medical workers charged with mass HIV infection in children in south of Kyrgyzstan

Court procedure on mass HIV infection of children in the city of Nookate of Osh oblast of Kyrgyzstan finished on August 1, the agency reports referring to the press service of the Ministry of Health of Kyrgyzstan.

Bishkek. August 5. Kazakhstan Today - Court procedure on mass HIV infection of children in the city of Nookate of Osh oblast of Kyrgyzstan finished on August 1, the agency reports referring to the press service of the Ministry of Health of Kyrgyzstan.

According to the judges that pronounced the sentence, as a result of two month judicial investigation, 9 medical workers out of 14 have been condemned according to article 316 (Negligence), 117 (HIV-infection) of the Criminal Code of Kyrgyzstan. Four have been pronounced innocent in connection with absence of proof of their fault. One criminal case has been closed.

All the condemned medical workers have been sentenced to various terms of imprisonment: from 3 till 5 years.

According to the court's decision the condemned are obliged to pay monetary indemnifications to each victim in the form of social benefit of 108 thousand som. 10 thousand som the condemned will pay for medicines and 250 thousand som for moral damage. The families of four children who died of HIV infection will receive 400 thousand som, for funeral - 20 thousand som and 400 thousand som to 4 mothers infected with AIDS.

According to the press service of the Ministry of Health until the verdict has not come into force, the names of the convicted prisoners will not be disclosed.

As it was informed earlier, in April of 2008 mass HIV infection of children was revealed in the southern regions of Kyrgyzstan.
