Nazarbayeva proposes to revise the treaty of Kazakhstan with the Holy See

"This agreement is for 10 years. It shall be automatically renewed for the next five years, unless one of the parties for the 6 months prior to the expiration of the contract gives the other party written notice of its desire to terminate it. My wish is to come back again to the treaty by the time when it will expire next period of its validity, in order to make certain amendments to it in accordance with the laws of the Republic of Kazakhstan," D. Nazarbayeva said.

She noted that at the time of signing of the agreement in 1998 there were very different socio-political and religious realities. According to the agreement, the parties recognize the mutual freedom in the exercitation of their rights and powers and commit themselves to respect this principle in their relations and cooperation for the benefit of people.

"In accordance with Article 2 of the Agreement, the competent authorities of the Republic of Kazakhstan will grant permission to remain for members of the Catholic Church from abroad appointed to serve in individual churches and other institutions of the Catholic Church in the Republic of Kazakhstan for the period of their appointment in accordance with the law," Majilis Committee for Foreign Affairs, Defence and Security notes in its decision on the draft law.

Kazakhstan recognizes the legal capacity of a legal entity such as the Catholic Church, the legal capacity of which is provided by the Code of Canon Law, which may be diocese or apostolic administrations, parishes, religious communities, missions, associations, seminaries, colleges, schools or institutions of education after their registration in the judiciary.
