Rich countries to increase support for agriculture - FAO

Rich countries should tenfold increase support for agriculture up to $30 billion a year for struggle against food crisis. The General Director of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Jacque Diouf informed, the agency reports referring to Financial Times on Tuesday.

Almaty. June 4. Kazakhstan Today - Rich countries should tenfold increase support for agriculture up to $30 billion a year for struggle against food crisis. The General Director of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Jacque Diouf informed, the agency reports referring to Financial Times on Tuesday.

For the first time, for the last 25 years, record increase of prices for foodstuffs became the main economic and political stimulus for investments into agricultural sector. "The only way out of crisis is increase of manufacture of food stuffs, in particular, in the poor countries," J. Diouf noted.

On the eve of FAO summit, which will take place this week, J. Diouf informed that the share of state support for agriculture is to be increased from 3 % up to 17 %.

According to FAO chairman, these investments will not only help solve problems of today's crisis, but will also allow to double volume of global manufacture of foodstuffs by 2050 when world population, according to the forecasts, will grow from 6 up to 9 billion.
