Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan interested in developing Eastern direction of North-South corridor

Deputy Minister of Transport of the Republic of Kazakhstan Serik Zhumangarin and General Director of the Agency of Transport and Communications under the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan Mammetkhan Chakyev held a bilateral meeting to discuss prospects for cooperation in the transport sector, primeminister.kz reports.

The two countries are actively co-operating in the development of the eastern direction of the North-South corridor, which runs through Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, providing transit of goods to Pakistan and further to India.

In July 2024, a road map was signed between Kazakhstan, Russia, Iran and Turkmenistan on synchronous development of the North-South corridor, and a decision was agreed on the use of the western branch of the Trans-Afghan railway. Kazakhstan expressed its readiness to participate with Turkmenistan and Afghanistan in the construction of sections of Afghanistan's railway "Turgundi-Herat-Kandahar-Spin-Buldak" in terms of ensuring the transport of railway track structure materials, sleepers, rails and fasteners made in Kazakhstan.

The meeting also discussed the nuances of the construction of the Turgundi-Herat railway and the possibility of activation of cargo deliveries to China via Turgundi. The parties noted mutual work to create competitive tariff conditions on all joint China-Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran corridors and on the North-South route, where Russia, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan agreed to create a single logistics operator on the eastern branch for seamless cargo transportation.
