Kyrgyzstan substituted death penalty by life imprisonment

Bishkek. June 28. Kazakhstan Today - The President of Kyrgyzstan Kurmanbek Bakiyev signed the law on amendments and additions to the legislation of the Republic substituting death penalty by life imprisonment, the agency reports referring to the Kyrgyzstan president's press service.

According to the press service, the law is directed at "humanization of the criminal legislation." The document had been initiated by the President and introduced in the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan in May, 2006. In connection with further constitutional reforming, on the basis of the bill with participation of the deputies the specified variant has been developed.

As it was informed earlier, the moratorium on death penalty has been in Kyrgyzstan since 1998. According to the legal experts of the Republic, for these years due to intolerable conditions more than 70 people sentenced to the highest measure of punishment died.
