Presidential elections in Azerbaijan to be held on October 15, 2008 - Central Electoral Committee

Baku. April 8. Kazakhstan Today - The presidential elections of 2008 in Azerbaijan will be held on October 15, the chairman of the Central Electoral Commission Mazahir Panahov informed at the briefing on Monday.

"According to the Constitution of Azerbaijan, presidential elections are held on the fifth year of presidency on the third Wednesday of October. This year this day will be on October 15. Officially the date of elections will be declared 120 days prior to the elections. The registration of the candidates for the president's post will begin the same day," M. Panahov said.

M. Panahov noted that the Central Electoral Committee will start consideration of the question of invitation of international observers to the elections.

"The Central Electoral Committee, the Parliament and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Azerbaijan have the right to invite observers for elections," the chairman of the Central Electoral Committee said.

He informed that the process of specification of the lists of voters has begun since January, 2008, but their exact quantity will be defined by the end of May. According to the preliminary data, 4 million 834 thousand 584 people have the right to take part in voting, 52 % - women.
