The United Nations defined priority directions for 2008. The UN Secretary General Sir Ban Ki-moon informed on Monday at the press conference in the UN headquarters in New York, transfers agency referring to a site of the United Nations.

Almaty. January 8. Kazakhstan Today - The United Nations defined priority directions for 2008. The UN Secretary General Sir Ban Ki-moon informed on Monday at the press conference in the UN headquarters in New York, transfers agency referring to a site of the United Nations.

According to Sir Ban Ki-moon, priority attention in the work of the United Nations in 2008 will be given to promotion of the objectives of development of the millennium, protection of human rights, settlement and prevention of conflicts and solution of the problem of global warming.

Sir Ban Ki-moon informed that this year will be the year of the poorest layers of the population on the planet and the activity of the United Nations will be devoted to satisfaction of their demands.

The UN Secretary General reminded that this year 60th anniversary of the General declaration of human rights will be celebrated and informed on intention to achieve general ratification of the International pact on civil and political rights and the International pact on economic, social and cultural rights.

Sir Ban Ki-moon declared readiness for more actively promote establishment of tribunal in Lebanon and to strengthening international justice. The UN Secretary General noted that in 2008 new global campaign on strengthening the mechanism of protection of human rights will be initiated.

As for settlement of conflicts, the UN Secretary General declared that 2008 will be the year of reorganization of the Department for Political Affairs in the view of necessity of strengthening of the role of the United Nations for prevention of conflicts. He informed that peacekeeping operation of the United Nations in Darfur will remain a priority on its agenda.
