UN High Commissioner for Refugees to visit Kazakhstan

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Antonio Guterres will visit Kazakhstan on November 13-14, the agency reports on Saturday.

Astana. November 12. Kazakhstan Today - The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Antonio Guterres will visit Kazakhstan on November 13-14, the agency reports on Saturday.

According to the press secretary of foreign policy department of Kazakhstan Ilyas Omarov, the visit will take place "during the trip across Central Asia with the objective to get acquainted with political-economical situation in the region.

During the trip, I. Omarov informed, carrying out of the meetings with the leadership of the Republic is planned. "Expansion of spectrum and directions of cooperation of Kazakhstan and the UN Department of the High Commissioner of the United Nations for Refugees is expected in the long term, he noted.

"The visit is regarded by the Kazakhstan party as recognition of successful cooperation between our country and the Department of the High Commissioner of the United Nations for Refugees," the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized, having added, that "Kazakhstan, being the participant of the convention of the United Nations on refugee status since 1998, firmly adheres to its obligations."

The Department of the High Commissioner of the United Nations for Refugees was founded by the resolution 319 (IV) of the General Assembly of the United Nations on December 3, 1949. Today the UN agency is one of the main humanitarian organizations in the world, in charge of which there are more than 30 million people.

The UN representation of the UNHCR Department in Kazakhstan has existed since 1995.
