UNHCR called upon EU to improve decision-making process of granting refuge

The UN Office of High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) positively estimates the positions in the project of the European pact concerning migration and granting of refuge. UNHCR press secretary Jenifer Pagonis informed yesterday at the briefing in Geneva.

Almaty. July 10. Kazakhstan Today - The UN Office of High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) positively estimates the positions in the project of the European pact concerning migration and granting of refuge. UNHCR press secretary Jenifer Pagonis informed yesterday at the briefing in Geneva.

This project was presented on Monday at the meeting of Ministers of the European Union in Cannes. "We call upon EU under presidency of France to incur responsibility for improvement of decision-making process connected with granting of refuge in the EU countries," J. Pagonis said. She reminded that UNHCR has repeatedly drawn attention to the necessity of unification of the legislations in this area.

UNHCR representative welcomed the steps on strengthening of cooperation between the EU member countries in the sphere of the rights of refugees and noted the initiative of creation of the European office on support of persons looking for asylum.

As of today, 27 countries - EU members take part in UNHCR programs on resettlement of refugees in the third countries, however, only 5 % of such resettlements accounts for EU.
