UNESCO Chairman encouraged world community to direct efforts to journalists' safety

Almaty. May 3. Kazakhstan Today - The UNESCO General Director Koichiro Matsuura in his message on the occasion of the World Day of Freedom of Press celebrated on May 3 called the world community to direct efforts to journalists' safety, the agency reports.

"I address all governments and state authorities with an appeal to put an end to widely widespread atmosphere of impunity due to which violence towards journalists is committed. The governments should carry out their duty to guarantee investigations concerning crimes against professional workers of mass media and their culprits are prosecuted," K. Matsuura said.

"For the last decade we have been witnessing sharp growth of violence towards journalists, professional workers of mass media and the corresponding personnel," K. Matsuura said. According to the data of trade union organizations, only in 2006 in the world more than 150 murders of workers of mass-media has been registered, hundreds of journalists were arrested and exposed to threats and attacks. "Journalistic activity has never been so dangerous before," the UNESCO General Director emphasized.
