Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan played her opening match at the first Grand Slam tournament of the 2026 season, the Australian Open, Qazinform News Agency reports.
In the first round, Rybakina faced Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan, ranked 100th in the WTA standings, and lived up to expectations by dominating on court to secure a comfortable 6-4, 6-3 victory in just 72 minutes.
Rybakina recorded two aces, committed seven double faults, and converted seven of 10 break points, while Juvan hit one ace, made six double faults, and converted four of nine break points during the match.

Kazakhstan earns 8 gold medals at Asian U17 Boxing Championships in Tashkent

Kazakhstan’s young boxing team finishing the Asian U17 Boxing Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, with a total of 16 medals, including eight gold, Qazinform News Agency reports.
According to the National Olympic Committee, the national team also secured three silver and five bronze medals.
Among the gold medal winners were Nurasyl Galym in the under 50 kg division, Emir Mukhit in the under 60 kg category, and Sabyrzhan Sagym in the over 80 kg class. Female boxers also contributed significantly to the team’s success, with titles won by Hatshepsut Sadvakasova, Ayaulym Ospanova, Diana Nadyrbek, and Zhansaya Yerzhan.
Kazakhstan’s silver medalists included Balym Gabitkyzy, Meiirzhan Zhunis, and Islam Suleymanogly, while Milana Inshina, Bekkhan Urazbay, Nurislam Onalbek, Rozaliya Baideman, and Ailin Khodzhamberdiyeva earned bronze medals in their respective divisions.

Five Kazakh athletes reach semifinals of boxing tournament in Serbia

Kazakhstani boxers competed on Friday in quarterfinal bouts on the second day of the Belgrade Winner boxing tournament in Belgrade, Serbia, Qazinform News Agency reports citing Sports.kz.
Representing Kazakhstan, Nurzat Ongarov (50 kg), Nurasyl Tolebek (60 kg), Nursultan Shildebay (80 kg), and Ibragim Betayev (90 kg) all secured confident 5-0 victories. With these dominant performances, they advance to the semifinals and lock in a minimum of bronze medals.
Adilbek Kozhakhan (55 kg) and Aman Konysbek (75 kg) were eliminated from the tournament.
The semifinals will be held today, May 16.
The Belgrade Winner tournament is set to run through May 17.

Two records fall at Kazakhstan Swimming Championships as national stars shine

Kazakhstan’s top swimmers delivered standout performances at the 2026 Summer National Swimming Championships in Taldykorgan, where two national records were broken on the opening day of competition, Qazinform News Agency reports.
The tournament has brought together 372 athletes from 17 regions across the country, including 229 men and 143 women. The event is officially recognized by World Aquatics and serves as a key qualifying competition for major international events later this year.
Results from the championship will determine selection for the World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25 m) 2026, scheduled to take place in China in December, as well as the Youth Olympic Games 2026 in Senegal this autumn.
The high stakes have also attracted international participation, with teams from Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan joining the competition.
The opening day saw two national records broken in the pool, with Gleb Kovalenya setting a new Kazakhstan record in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 22.06 seconds, and Xeniya Ignatova broke the national record in the 200-meter individual medley, finishing in 2:17.40.
Despite the record-breaking performances, the competition largely followed expectations. Kazakhstan’s leading swimmers - Sofia Spodarenko, Adilbek Mussin, and Xeniya Ignatova - all secured comfortable victories in their signature events, underlining their dominance on the national stage.

Kazakhstan has secured its first medal at the Asian Throwing Championships in Mokpo, South Korea, Qazinform News Agency reports, citing the National Olympic Committee.
Ivan Ivanov of Kazakhstan won bronze in the shot put at the continental championship. In his best attempt, the athlete recorded a throw of 19.41 meters.
Gold went to Hongfei Chen of China with a throw of 20.18 m. Silver was claimed by China's Chengyo Chen, who threw 19.64 m.

Olga Shmelyova wins gold and silver at 2026 Canoe Sprint Asian Championships

Team Kazakhstan has added five more medals to its tally at the 2026 ACC Canoe Sprint Asian Championships in Hefei, China, serving as a qualifying event for the Los Angeles Olympic Games, Qazinform News Agency reports.
According to the Committee for Sports and Physical Culture, Kazakhstan’s Olga Shmelyova won gold in the women’s K-1 200 meters event. She later teamed up with Tatyana Tokarnitskaya to claim silver in the 500 meters race.
Last year, I finished third in this distance. Today I managed to beat my rival and take revenge. I put all my effort into training this year, and here is the result!" Shmelyova said after the finish.
This marks her third medal at the tournament in Hefei - one gold and two silver.
World Championship bronze medalist Viktor Stepanov also secured a place among the top three, winning bronze in the men’s C-1 200 meters event.Additionally, Kazakhstan earned two more bronze medals in the 500 meters events: Sergey Yemelyanov and Alisher Khayotov finished third in the C-2 race, while Bekarys Ramatulla and Dmitriy Kholmogorov took bronze in the K-2 event.
After two days of competition, Kazakhstan has collected nine medals in total - two gold, two silver, and five bronze. The final medals will be contested on Sunday, with China currently leading the overall standings by a significant margin.
