Construction of new dam underway in South Kazakhstan

"The situation was very dangerous, because both Shardara and Koksarai reservoirs reached their brimful capacity and there was a very high risk of flooding. So, it was very difficult to provide access for machinery and bring it here," said Islam Abishev, Chairman of Water Resources Committee, of the Kazakh Ministry of Agriculture.

Almaty. November 8. Kazakhstan Today - A new dam is being built along the Shardara reservoir in South Kazakhstan. The dam, the construction of which began this summer, is 80 percent complete.

According to Caspionet, only a few hundreds of meters are left to the border with Uzbekistan. The dam is expected not only to protect the southerners from the floods, but also connect the two large population centers. This facility is already being referred to as a strategic one.

"The works are carried out at a fast pace in two shifts. There are 26 contractors and 800 people, as well as machinery," said Karatai Dossayev, Department Head of South Kazakhstan Region Office of Kazsushar Republican State Enterprise.

At the time of separation of the Kazakh-Uzbek border, a section of the road between Shardara and Maktaaral ended up in the territory of the neighboring country. And the only short way connecting the villages became 200 kilometers longer, so the locals were happy about the construction of the dam. Moreover, the dam will protect and strengthen the south shoreline of the Shardara reservoir, which is already overflooding. 34 kilometers of the dam is expected to be completed by January 1. Next year, workers will only have to lay asphalt on the new road and install lighting.
