USA not plan to place military bases in Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan
Almaty. April 6. Kazakhstan Today - The USA does not plan to place military bases in the territory of Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan. The Commander of the US Central Command, General David Petraeus, informed on Monday during his visit to Astana, the agency reports citing Voice of America.
According to Voice of America, General Petraeus during his visit to Astana noted growing value of Kazakhstan, as a transit country of the cargoes directed to Afghanistan. He also underlined that the USA do not plan to place military bases in the territory of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
"The USA is not interested in construction of the military base in Kazakhstan, but is trying to receive consent of Astana for a lining of the new air route," independent American journalist Joshua Kucera, specializing on covering of security issues in Central Asia informed Voice of America.
According to Kucera, possibility of opening of the new air route became the main goal of the visit of D. Petraeus to Kazakhstan. "The new transit route through the territory of Kazakhstan will be shorter than it is now."
During his visit, General Petraeus and the official representatives of Kazakhstan held the negotiations on organization of annual peace-making exercises Steppe Eagle within the NATO's Partnership for Peace Program.
According to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs press service, during D. Petraeus's visit he met the State Secretary - Minister for Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, Kanat Saudabaev.
"The officials discussed questions of further strengthening and expansion of strategic partnership of Kazakhstan and the USA, one of which main directions is military cooperation, including Afghanistan stabilization efforts."
