Kazakhstan expresses hope for support of bill on cancellation of Jackson-Vanik Amendment

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan expresses hope that the US administration will support the bill cancelling Jackson-Vanik Amendment.

Astana. February 5. Kazakhstan Today - The Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan expresses hope that the US administration will support the bill cancelling Jackson-Vanik Amendment. The official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Yerzhan Ashikbayev informed at the briefing on Monday, the agency reports.

"The Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Republic Kazakhstan welcomes the initiative of the well-known American politician and expresses hope that it will find support in the US Congress and US Administration," the representative of the Kazakhstan foreign policy department said.

Y. Ashikbayev reminded that on January 29 one of the most authoritative members of the USA Senate Richard Lugar introduced the bill cancelling the so-called Jackson-Vanik Amendment to the law of the USA on Trade, imposing restrictions on trade relations of the USA with foreign countries. The amendment was accepted in 1974 and forbids maintenance of normal trade relations of the USA with the countries having restrictions on freedom of emigration.

At the same time, White House annually uses the right of temporary suspension of the amendment operation concerning Kazakhstan in the view of indisputable execution by our country of the constitutional norms and international obligations on compliance with freedom of movement of the citizens."

In the beginning of 2008 the Senator R. Lugar visited Kazakhstan to become acquainted with the course of realization of the program Cooperative Threat Reduction, more known as Nanna-Lugar Program. "Successful performance of this program directed at liquidation of weapons of mass destruction, became the basis of the Kazakhstan-American strategic partnership, powerful contribution of Kazakhstan to maintenance of global modes of non-distribution," the MFA representative considers.
